Frequently Asked Questions
What is the North West Bar Association (NWBA)?
The NWBA is a voluntary association of advocates, originally founded on 18 March 1981 under the name “Association of Advocates of Bophuthatswana.” It later adopted the present name, NWBA, and continues to serve as the regional bar association for advocates practising in the North West Province of South Africa.
What does membership of the NWBA entail?
Membership of the NWBA means being part of a community of advocates who practise in the region. Members have access to the Association’s chambers, its networks, and participation in the updated membership rolls.
Who can become a member of the NWBA?
Any qualified advocate practising within the North West Province may apply for membership. We maintain a current list of full members and associate members on our website.
Does the NWBA manage pupillage applications?
Yes. We provide guidance and relevant forms for candidates wishing to apply for pupillage. Prospective pupils can find detailed information and application links under the Pupillage section of our website.
Can members hold individual or shared chambers?
Yes. Our chambers are arranged to accommodate members either individually or in shared spaces. Over time, improvements and modern partitioning have allowed us to house several advocates comfortably within the same premises.
Has the NWBA produced judges or senior legal professionals?
We are proud of our long history of professional excellence. Many of our members have gone on to serve on the Bench, and the NWBA has, over the years, produced a notable number of judges relative to its size.
Is NWBA membership required to practise as an advocate in the North West Province?
No. Membership of the NWBA is voluntary. While it is not required to practise, joining the Association offers valuable support, professional development, shared resources, and a strong peer network.
How do I enquire about joining the NWBA?
Simply contact us via the website form, email us at nwbarassociation@gmail.com
, or call our office. We will gladly guide you through the membership process and answer any related questions.
